Study Questions
1. Read John 5:1-7. Why did Jesus ask the lame man if he wished to get well–isn’t that an obvious question? Why is this question important/necessary?
2. Does verse 7 shed any light on vs.3-4? What did this man appear to believe about the water?
3. Is it a struggle for you to understand why God chooses to heal/help/prosper some, and not others? Why or why not? Certainly, this is a stumbling block for many who are not followers of Christ. How would you answer them if they asked why God chooses to bless or heal one person over another (like in this story)?
4. What reasons could the man have for NOT wanting to be completely healed? Why, and in what ways, do we sometimes choose to stay in our own “unwell” situation?
5. How has God brought healing and restoration into your life—physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually? Spend a few minutes thinking about your answer to this question and, if you are comfortable, share your thoughts.
6. The religious leaders rebuked Jesus for healing this man on the Sabbath. How were they ‘missing the mark’ (sinning)?
7. How is God urging your heart to show mercy and offer hope to a particular person, people?
