Study Questions

1. Read 1 John 5:1-4. What does John say is true of those who believe that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah) and the Son of God? In a Jewish mind, what/who were they expecting the Messiah to be? What are some of the arguments people make today for who Jesus is?

2. Why is it so important that we believe Jesus is God? What changes if we don’t believe that?

3. What is the effect of genuine faith in Jesus Christ? According to this passage, what does victorious faith look like to you?

4. 1 John 5:3 says that God’s commands are “not burdensome”. Do you find this to be true? Why or why not?

5. Why does John emphasize all three witnesses (water, blood, and Spirit) in this passage? What does each witness represent?

6. Read 1 John 5:5-9. How do these witnesses testify that those who trust and follow Jesus today are overcomers? See also:
o Have overcome (past) – 1 Peter 1:18-20
o Are overcoming (present) – Romans 8:31-39
o Will overcome (future) – Revelation 12:11; 1 Corinthians 15:50-58

7. Read 1 John 5:10-12. What marks the differences between those who have the Son and those who do not? Does this comfort you? Why/why not?

8. What has this study taught you about how you can overcome through faith? How will it effect the way you live this week?
