Study questions
1. What would your personal family genogram look like? Genograms can trace many things: careers, character traits, talents and skills, locations lived, etc. What is something you would you like to trace in your family, positive or negative?
2. Read Genesis 37-39 for context. What was the root sin issue with Joseph’s brothers, and what was the outcome? What would you say was one dysfunctional pattern in your home growing up, and what resulted from it?
3. How did God prepare Joseph for what would be asked of him, even in his childhood?
(Hint: Which relative modeled forgiveness and restoration for Joseph? See Genesis 33:1-10.)
4. How do you see God’s hand upon Joseph even in his deepest trials? How have you experienced God’s hand upon your life in a difficult season?
5. How does Joseph’s life lessons encourage you to trust in God’s sovereignty when you don’t understand His timing?
6. Are you letting the Lord Jesus enable you to overcome your past hurts and trials (like Joseph did)? What area is He asking you to release to Him? [Remember: Name it, Own it, Steward it.] (See Colossians 1, 3:1-17)
7. Take courage from Joseph’s life, and pray this blessing over one another in your group. “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.”
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
