Study Questions

1.    Read 1 Samuel 1:1-18. Describe the relationship Hannah had with Elkanah, her husband.

2.    What were the complications that came as a result of the polygamous relationship Elkanah had with his wives? What does this teach you about God working through broken, fallen people to accomplish His redemptive plan?

3.    Read 1 Samuel 1:3-8. Describe Hannah’s struggles. Can you identify with her hurt and desperation? Why/why not/how?

4.    What do we learn through this account about prayer, and faith, in our relationship with the Lord? Look back at 1 Samuel 1:12-18. Read Psalm 37:4; 1 Corinthians 13:12. What does these passages teach? What do they not teach?

5.    Why do you think Eli assumed Hannah was drunk by the Temple of the Lord? What does this teach you about Eli, and also of the culture/temple practices?

6.    What hope do you find in this passage? What does God teach us about Himself in this passage? What does it look like to choose hope amid despair – trusting God is faithful? How has God answered prayer beyond your requests & expectations? How has/is He continuing to satisfy your deepest longings?

7.    How does this passage help us realize our deepest longing for God’s Son, Jesus our Savior?
