Isaiah 1:18
Study Questions

1. Read Isaiah 1:1-17. In v.11, why is the Lord responding to His people this way? Were the Israelites doing what was required of them? If so, then what was the disconnect? How do we as Christians sometimes fall into the trap of relying on our outward acts of worship without truly being genuine from our hearts?

2. Isaiah 1:10-15 announces who is held responsible for sin; in v.18 who is the one who can remove it? Why does the Lord say, ‘Let us reason together’ …what does this imply? What does this teach you about the character of God?

3. How necessary was the blood of Christ for the cleansing of sin? Read Hebrews 10:10, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, 1 Corinthians 1:2. What do these passages teach about positional sanctification (once and for all)?

4. Review the difference between “positional” sanctification and “progressive” sanctification. As the work of sanctification by the blood of Christ is definitive (positional sanctification: salvation is eternally secure), the Bible teaches the work of continual (progressive) sanctification continues until we are home with the Lord, for those who are in Christ, through the work of the Holy Spirit as our guide. How does this truth give
you hope even in times when you’ve sinned or disobeyed the Lord?

5. What role do we have in this work of progressive sanctification? Read 2 Corinthians 7:1, Galatians 5:16-18 and Romans 12:2. How have you experienced God’s sanctifying work in your life?

6. How has this study helped you to better understand the work of sanctification? What is the Lord calling you to change in your life to better glorify Him?
