Study Questions
Hebrews 6:1-12

1. Contextually, what is the connection between our main study passage (Hebrews 6:1-12) and Hebrews 5:11-14? Why is this contextual awareness important to better understand Hebrews 6:1-8?

2. Read Hebrews 6:1-3. Identify the foundational principles of the gospel mentioned in these verses. Why are they considered ‘elementary’? (See also Hebrews 5:12.) Do you have a solid understanding of these biblical principles? If not, how can you change that?

3. Read Hebrews 6:4-8. Does this text refer to someone losing their salvation? Why or why not? (Take note of the personal pronouns used in chapter 6: verses 1-3 compared to verses 4-8, and then again in verses 9-12).

4. Why is it impossible for such people to be restored to repentance (verse 6)?

5. If it doesn’t refer to someone losing their salvation, how do you explain their “enlightenment,” “tasting,” and “partaking of the Holy Spirit”?

6. Give examples in the Bible of those who participated in God’s plan and promises - and experienced the power of the Holy Spirit – but were not true believers. (Not limited to the following people, but here are some examples to get started: Hebrews 3:16-19; 1 John 2:19; 1 Samuel 2:12-36; Acts 8:18-22.)

7. What is the point of Hebrews 6:7-8? Who does the ground refer to? Who does “for whose sake it is tilled” refer to? Can you think of any similar wording anywhere else in the Bible?

8. In light of one of the major themes in the book of Hebrews, what do you think is the big picture warning here? How does it apply to you?

9. How should we treat those who have fallen away from God? Should we give up on them - believing that it is impossible for them to turn back to God again?

10. Read Hebrews 6:9, what are the “better things” that accompany salvation?

11. According to verses 9-12, how can we be assured of our salvation?

12. What applications are there in this passage for us? What do you need to do based on what you have learned in this passage?
