Study Questions

1. Read 2 Samuel 12:1-15. Who was Nathan and why did he approach King David?

2. Why do you think Nathan first addressed David with a story (verses 1-4)? What makes it difficult when someone confronts you about something you’ve done/are doing wrong? What can you learn from Nathan’s approach that is helpful in confronting a friend who’s living in sin? Give examples…

3. How could Nathan have justified not addressing David? Do we have a responsibility as believers to hold each other accountable? What does that look like? What does that not look like? Compare this passage with Proverbs 27:17, Galatians 6:1-2, James 5:16, and Ecclesiastes 4:9-10.

4. Why do you think did David responded the way he did (verses 5-6)?

5. Why did the Lord respond (through Nathan) the way He did (verses 7-12)? Do you believe it was too harsh? Why/why not?

6. Read 2 Samuel 11:1-24. List how many of the 10 Commandments David broke in this one situation. God’s Word characterizes David as a ‘man after God’s own heart’ (1 Samuel 13:14). What does this teach us about God’s character? His grace? His righteousness?

7. What was David’s response to being confronted about his sin (verses 13-15)? Identify other ways that David could have responded differently – good or bad. Have you ever responded defensively, justifying your sinful attitude/behavior even when confronted by someone you trust? How?

8. What is the result of David’s repentance? (See also Psalm 51.)

9. Do you have an accountability partner in Christ? Who? What are some ‘agreements’ that you have with each other that fosters accountability? If not, how can you begin to pursue a brother/sister in Christ who can help your faith ‘stay the course’?
