Leviticus 26:1; Colossians 3:5; 1 John 2:15-17
1. Read Leviticus 26:1. What would be considered a sacred stone in Old Testament times? What was the commandment that the Lord gave the Israelites? What could be considered “religious idols” today?
2. Where does idolatry in a person originate? (See Jeremiah 2:27-28; Ezekiel 14:3; Colossians 3:5; 1 John 2:15-17.) Is it possible to serve God and an idol at the same time? (See Exodus 20:4-5; 2 Kings 17:33; Matthew 6:24.) Give examples of when this is a problem.
3. How do you balance keeping the good gifts that the Lord has given you from becoming potential idols in your life?
4. Read Romans 6:16. Here are some good evaluative questions in searching for idols in your heart:
o What do you voluntarily spend your time on?
o What do you spend your money on?
o What are your strongest emotions?
o What do you trust in to make your life better?
5. How do/can you remind yourself (regularly) that the Lord is better than anything else that you desire in this life? (See Isaiah 44:8.)
