Study Questions

Matthew 4:1-11

1.    Read Matthew 4:1-11. What was the purpose(s) of Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness? What was the meaning behind the 3 ways Satan temped Jesus? What is so significant about the way Jesus responded? Why was it so important for Jesus to not fall into temptation? (See also Hebrews 2:17; 4:15.) Which of the 3 temptations that Jesus faced can you most identify with? What can we learn from His example?

2.    Read 2 Corinthians 10:13. What does this passage say about temptation? Does this comfort you or frustrate you? Why? Have you ever experienced a time when the Lord provided ‘a way out’ in a weak moment of temptation? Explain.

3.    How do you overcome the things that tempt you to sin? Jesus quoted Scripture to Satan. What Scripture(s) can you memorize to help better prepare you for those times when you battle temptation?
