Study Questions


1. Apart from Christ’s work on the cross, describe the greatest act of love or sacrifice that you have experienced from someone else. How did that act of love or sacrifice change you? Your relationship with others?


2. Describe the difference between a servant and a friend. (See verse 15.)


3. How is friendship with Jesus different than friendships with others?


4. Who was called a friend of God in Scripture? (Read James 2:23; 2 Chronicles 20:7; Isaiah 41:8; and Exodus 33:11.)


5. What does our status as friends give us the right to know? (See verse 15.) Does this help you appreciate the friendship you have with God? Why or why not?


6. According to verse 14, what responsibility do you have to show your love toward Jesus? (See also John 6:44; Ephesians 1:4-5.)


7. Can we be friends with God and hate our brothers? (See 1 John 4:21-5:3.)


8. Some may say that to preach obedience is to be legalistic. When is obedience legalistic and when is it not?


9. What needs to happen in your life for your friendship with God to be genuine?


10. Practically, how can you prove your love for ‘one another’? What does this look like this week?
