Hebrews 1:4-2:18
1. Read Hebrews 1:4-14. Identify the various characteristics of Jesus that define His nature. What difference is there between Jesus and the angels? Why was the writer of Hebrews so intentional to clarify that Jesus is greater than the angels? Describe where you see a a similar temptation to be drawn to supernatural things and beings happening in our culture today.
2. Hebrews 1:14 describes angels as “ministering spirits”. Try to describe the various ways they ministered throughout Biblical history and support your thoughts with Biblical references.
3. Read Hebrews 2:1-4. What happened to people who did not obey the messages from angels? (See Luke 1:5-23.) Why must you not neglect what the Lord Jesus Christ claims? How can you be sure about God’s message of salvation?
4. Read Hebrews 2:5-9. What does this passage teach you about the human condition? In light of the incarnation, how was Jesus ‘made a little lower than the angels’? What did Jesus accomplish that the angels could never? Why?
5. Why do we not yet see all things subjected to Christ Jesus (v.8)? (See also: 1 Corinthians 15:26-28.)
6. Read Hebrews 2:9-18. What place does sanctification have with regard to Jesus’ substitutional death and resurrection?
7. What authority has been handed over to the devil (verse 14)? What significance does the temptation of Jesus by the devil (a fallen angel) have to do with Jesus being our representative and ‘High Priest’ before the Father?
8. How has this study helped you grow your confidence in Jesus?
